What is the difference between SEO and SEM?
Really there is no official difference between the terms of SEO or SEM simply a matter of preference. Technically SEO is really apart of the concept of Search Engine Marketing however MCV uses both terms to define organic site optimization or SEO and paid search management (AdWords, Yahoo Search, AdCenter) or SEM. On the right, you will see a listing of online marketing terms that often times need definition. Now, these may not be “official” definitions, but they are the ones we use.
Before you begin, here are some online marketing terms to be familiar with:
- SEO: Search Engine Optimization or organic optimization of a website both on page and off.
- SEM: Search Engine Marketing: Paid Search Management like Google AdWords, Yahoo Search Marketing, and Bing AdCenter.
- PPC: Pay Per Click or the ability to pay a search engine to surface ads and only pay when they are clicked upon.
- Online Marketing: Marketing your company, products and/or services via the internet.
- Search Engine Reputation Management (SERM): SERM is the use of SEO & SEM to “accentuate the positive” when it comes to your company or your personal name when it comes up in search results.
- SERP: Search Engine Results Page is the page of links that show up after the user types in a query.
- Link building: The act of adding links to external sites, tagged with keywords, directing traffic to your site.
